Always the same toe?

Your sock covers every side of that toe. Except the one that blisters.

You know the spot before you leave the house. Between your toes, a normal sock puts nothing. So skin presses on skin, step after step, on the exact spot where that toe meets its neighbour. Every long run, hike, or workday. That's why it keeps coming back.

You've probably accepted it as just how your feet are built. You can't change the shape of your toes. But you can change what's between them.

Look at this ↓

A sock, seen from the front

A normal sock wraps all five toes as one bundle. Between them: nothing.

A normal sock.Four places where skin meets skin. The pinky tucks under the fourth toe.
CapeToe.The pinky still tucks under. Now there's fabric in between.

Now there's fabric between your toes. Two layers of it.

Your toe still curls. It still leans on its neighbour. It just lands on fabric now, not skin.

That's the whole trick. And it's the only kind of sock that can do it. Podiatrist Rebecca Rushton calls toe socks “The ONLY Sock That Addresses Blisters Between Toes.”

“anything that pulls my toes in together (like regular socks) starts to hurt after 15+ km.”
Trail runner

Which one is you?

Runners describe the same three toe shapes, over and over.

The pinky that curls under

Your little toe tucks under the fourth. The blister sits under the pinky, or on the fourth toe. The most common one.

“it's like the toe gets bent and goes under the toe next to it.”
Runner

The big toe that folds under the second

Your big toe leans in. The second toe rides over it. The blister sits on the inside of the big toe.

“They end up slightly folding in under my second toe which eventually creates a blister on the inside of my big toe.”
Multi-day hiker, South Africa

The toes that cross or crowd

Two toes ride on each other. Or your feet swell late in the run and push them together.

“My toes try to overlap when my feet get tired, so i would get blisters between toes”
Trail runner, 160 km ultra

You're not the odd one out. In a 2024 study of 86 hikers, the toes that blistered most were the second toe and the pinky.

Found yours? Keep going. Blister on your heel or under your foot, and never between your toes? Then this page isn't for you. We'd rather say so now.

You know the toe. You know what comes next.

The first sting, somewhere around the same kilometre as last time.

Checking whether it's getting worse.

Wondering how much longer you can ignore it, while your legs still have kilometres left in them.

You don't want to manage that toe better. You want to forget it's there.

The cause never moves. So the blister doesn't either

Most people think a blister comes from skin rubbing back and forth. It's closer to a tear.

When two patches of skin press together, the surface sticks. The bone underneath keeps moving with every step. So the skin gets pulled apart from the inside, a tiny bit at a time, until the gap fills with fluid. That's the blister.

Between your toes, what sticks is skin on skin. Damp skin, too: toe skin is the wettest skin on your foot, about twice as wet as your heel. And damp skin sticks harder.

Now add a toe that curls. It curls the same way every run. Onto the same neighbour. With the same damp skin in between.

Same cause, same place. Every time.

533

trail runners were asked what predicts a blister. The biggest predictor by far: having had one before.

Survey of 533 trail-ultra runners, Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, 2023.

Sounds like bad news. It's the opposite. A blister that always comes back to the same spot is one you can get ahead of. You already know where it will be. The only question is what's sitting there when the run starts.

You name it, you've put it on that toe

If taping helps, you already know that spot needs covering. The question is how to make that cover part of getting dressed for your run.

Some of it treats the wrong thing. The rest treats the right spot, but only while it stays on, and only on the days you remember it. Either way, it's one more thing to do before every run.

Missed the spot

Wider shoes
More room from the shoe. Your toes still land on each other.
Shorter nails
No nail cutting the toe next door. The skin still grips.
“Blister” socks, double socks
Extra layers under your foot and heel. Between the toes: still nothing.

Hit the spot, for a while

Vaseline, anti-chafe balm
Works for about an hour and a half. Then, in podiatrist Rebecca Rushton's words, “even the greasiest ones increase friction levels above baseline measures.” Worse than nothing.
Tape, plasters
Works while it's on. Sweat gets under the edge. And it only works on the days you remember it.
Gel toe sleeves
Some swear by them. For others they twist, bunch and work their way off. Either way: one more thing to cut, fit and put on before every run.
“I feel irritated at having spent money on different shoes because there is literally no difference between them, even been professionally fitted etc”
Ultrarunner
“I was taping individual toes but that only lasts for so long in summer heat/sweat and water crossings.”
Ultrarunner
“now I tape them up before a start. Although that didn't help this last time, flawed toe design maybe.”
Hiker, Drakensberg

A sleeve on each toe is the piece of tape you never have to remember. It's already on. And it can't lift. Even if your tape works, it's a job. This isn't.

The Long Run · Coolmax Ankle

A sleeve on every toe. Knitted in. So it stays

The Long Run Coolmax Ankle toe sock in dark grey, a sleeve on every toe
1

Separates

Five sleeves, pinky included. Skin never touches skin.

2

Stays

Nothing to apply. Nothing to re-stick at km 30. What's between your toes at km 1 is still there at km 90.

3

Dries

COOLMAX® yarn around every toe. It pulls sweat off the wettest skin on your foot. Drier skin grips less.

You don't want a sock. You want the long run where you forget that toe exists.

No checking it at every water table. No tape in your kit bag. Just the route, your legs and the kilometres. And at the end, you take your shoes off without bracing for what you'll find.

That's the run this sock is built for.

  • As thick as a regular performance sock
  • Snug heel and arch band

What runners say once there's fabric between their toes

“My little toes tend to curl and get squashed beneath the 4th toe as I walk. I have had great relief with my toe socks. I wear them as liners. They are thin breathable “gloves” for your feet that protect by providing friction barriers between your toes. So far these have saved my little toes from being brutalized by their neighbors.”
Camino walker
“I used to put bandaids and/or Vaseline between the dubious toes and no longer need to.”
Ultrarunner
“My big toes do a funny thing when I walk long distances for a couple of days. They end up slightly folding in under my second toe which eventually creates a blister on the inside of my big toe. I've tried taping my big toe, but the chafing ends up causing a blister on the second toe. The solution came after I spotted a pair of toe-socks. I bought them to try it out and after my first multi-day hike without any foot discomfort AT ALL I went back and bought another two pairs.”

What it won't do

Better you know now than after.

  • It won't help a heel blister, a blister under the ball of your foot, or a black toenail. Different causes. For those, it's just a good sock. One trail runner: “they have solved the issue of blisters between my toes.” Same runner, same thread: “I do still get blisters at the tips of my toes/under the toe nails”.
Trail runner, almost 20 years in toe socks
  • It won't straighten your toes. It doesn't try to.
  • It needs a bit of room in your shoe. They're about as thick as a regular performance sock, but the sleeves add a touch of width across the toes. If your shoes already feel tight there, they'll feel tighter.
  • They may feel unfamiliar at first. Runners who stick with them say it fades. Some never get used to it. That's what the 99 days are for.

99 days. Wear them, wash them, run in them

Run in them for 99 days. Race in them. Take them on the Sunday long run. More than a quick try-on in your living room. If the blister between your toes isn't gone, send them back. Full refund, even if you've worn and washed them.

Still wondering?

Will they work for your toes?

Will my curled little toe fit inside its sleeve?
Yes. The pinky sleeve is the smallest of the five and it stretches, so a curled toe slides in just the way it is. The sock doesn't try to straighten it. It simply puts fabric between your pinky and the toe next to it, which is exactly the spot where your blister starts. And if it doesn't sit right on your foot, you have 99 days to send them back.
Which size do I take?
S: UK 3 to 5.5. M: UK 6 to 8.5. L: UK 9 to 12. XL: UK 12.5 to 15. Same chart for men and women.
Do they actually stop blisters?

Yes, between your toes. That’s the exact job they’re built for. Right now, on every long run, that toe presses onto its neighbour, skin on skin, step after step. In these toe socks, there’s fabric in between. Same toe, same curl, same run, but it lands on fabric instead of skin.

Take them on your next long run and look at that spot when you take your shoes off. If the blister between your toes isn’t gone within 99 days, send them back for a full refund.

What are they made of?
38.4% COOLMAX®, 59.4% nylon and 2.2% spandex (Lycra). The COOLMAX® pulls sweat off your skin, the nylon makes them hard-wearing, and the spandex keeps each sleeve snug around its toe.
Will they fit in my running shoes?
Yes, as long as your shoes aren't already tight across the toes. They're about as thick as a regular performance sock; the sleeves add a touch of width across the toes. If your shoes already pinch there, they'll feel tighter.
Won't it feel weird?
At first, maybe. Fabric between your toes is new. Then you stop noticing it's there. Even runners who were sure they'd hate it say so.
“I was against toe socks until I tried them”
Trail runner
“You don't really notice there's fabric between your toes.”
Runner
“I'll take weird feeling toes over blisters any day and twice on Sunday.”
Ultrarunner
What if they don't work for me?
Send them back within 99 days for a full refund, even if you've worn and washed them.
Will they hold up to a 90 km day?
The sleeves are knitted in. They can't lift or wear off. The heel and arch band keeps them seated. Reinforced toes and heel. What's between your toes at the start is there at the finish.
Do you deliver across South Africa?
Yes. Tracked delivery anywhere in South Africa, and it's free on orders of 3 pairs or more.
Won't they be hot?
They're as thick as a regular performance sock. The yarn pulls sweat off the skin instead of holding it. And now that yarn sits between your toes too. More air between your toes, not less. Which means less trapped heat and less sweat sitting on the skin.
What happens when my feet get wet?
Like any wet sock: heavier and cooler until they dry. But the fabric between your toes is still there. Lube washes out. Tape lifts. This doesn't. The yarn dries faster than cotton.
“Comfortable and not a single blister, even in races when I've had wet feet for hours.”
Trail runner
How long do they take to put on?
One toe at a time. Big toe first. Push each sleeve down to the base before you do the next. Then pull up the heel. Slow the first time. Quick after that.

You already know the toe. Give it its own sleeve.

Run in them for 99 days. If the blister between your toes isn't gone, send them back. Every rand refunded, even after you've run in them.
